Just because you live in an apartment doesn’t mean you can’t maintain a green thumb and enjoy freshly grown food.  It’s just that you have limited space, so you have to plan accordingly.  Here are some tips to enjoying your own apartment garden.

Pick Your Spaces

Most people use their balcony for potted plants and gardens.  But you don’t have to limit yourself to the outdoors.  Consider some cool vertical gardening systems that can transform a wall into a work of art.  Urbilis is one manufacturer of wall gardening systems.  You can see examples of their productshere.  Plants on Walls has an entire “how to” guide to vertical gardening.  Our recommendation is to add life to your apartment with both indoor and outdoor plants.

Pick Your Plants

The Learning Channel says the following plants are nearly impossible to kill:

  • English Ivy
  • Pothos
  • Snake Plant
  • Spider Plant
  • Jade Plant
  • Geraniums
  • Bamboo
  • California Poppy
  • Cast Iron Plant
  • Ficus Benjamina

If you’re looking to grow food you can eat, EatingWell.com says these are the herbs and vegetables you should grow in your apartment:

  • Bush Beans
  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Lettuce
  • Snap Peas
  • Radishes
  • Mustard Greens
  • Basil
  • Dill

Purify The Air

Plants add color, fresh scents and are an attractive addition to both indoor and outdoor spaces in your apartment.  They also cleanse the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and other pollutants, while releasing oxygen into your apartment.  Some well known “air purifiers” include:

  • Orchids
  • Gerber Daisies
  • Ferns
  • Spider Plants

So, while you plan your apartment decorating, consider how plants can add more than a touch of design:  They add food to the table and clean your apartment at the same time.  That’s a pretty good deal.
